Feyenoord announced midweek that Jaap Stam is the successor to Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who will depart in the summer.
However, it is becoming clear that the former defender and current PEC Zwolle boss was not their first choice.
An experienced and older head coach was Feyenoord’s preference and Dick Advocaat was approached before turning down the role. AD is reporting that Louis van Gaal was also contacted by the Rotterdam club but he also said no.
Van Gaal has already confirmed that he turned down a great offer last year and is retired from coaching.
