Feyenoord have announced that technical director Martin van Geel will leave the club in July.

Van Geel has been in the role since the 2011/12 season and helped the club get back into a sound financial footing.

However, in recent months criticism has grown over van Geel’s leadership and views on the future of Feyenoord.

On Wednesday morning, Feyenoord confirmed that van Geel will now leave the club on the 1st of July. He feels it is best for the club that he departs.

A statement on the Feyenoord website read, “I will be proud about what we have achieved together over the past eight years and I close the door behind me. Of course it is unfortunate that it will end soon, but the fate of a td is that successes from the past and where you come from as a club are quickly forgotten by a part of the outside world if it runs into a lesser period.

“That’s a shame, but that’s how it works. The negative attention that is now around me is not good for Feyenoord. That is why I make space. “

Feyenoord have not yet announced a replacement for the technical director.
