However Vitesse refused to sell to a rival, and would not listen to any offer that Ajax would make, with the midfielder eventually joining Chelsea for around €7 million.

Ajax then tried again with Chelsea to loan Van Ginkel when Christian Eriksen joined Tottenham, but the London club rejected their offer, and were adamant that the youngster is in their plans this season.

However, Van Ginkel has now stated that a move to Ajax would have been nice for his career, as he eyes a spot at next summer’s World Cup.

He told Voetbal International, “Of course Ajax would also have been a nice step for me. Especially with a view to the World Championships in Brazil next year. A boy of my age wants to play every week.”

The 20 year old then went on to say that he believes he will get minutes for Chelsea this season, although a place in the World Cup will be out of reach if he doesn’t. Van Ginkel was originally named in the squad for the recent qualifiers, but was dropped by coach Louis van Gaal because of his lack of playing time.
