When Marco Van Ginkel joined Chelsea from Vitesse Arnhem in 2012 – he did not anticipate the troubles that were to come. Soon after joining the Blues, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him for seven months. Not having been able to solidify satisfactory playing time since, he spent time at AC Milan last season, and was planning on spending this campaign at Stoke City. However, his playing time has been limited to cameo substitutions, and new signings have brought further competition to midfield spots. Chelsea and Stoke agreed a move away would be best, and he will spend the remainder of the season in Eindhoven.
Van Ginkel will provide Eredivisie reinforcements, and cover for the injured Andres Guardado, though, due to Champions League roster rules, he will not be able to participate in the round of 16 matches against Athletico Madrid, and future games should PSV proceed.
Chelsea still see a future for the young Dutchman at Stamford Bridge, so they prefer not to sell him outright, and he should get the chance to prove himself to his home club by impressing with PSV.
