Without a league win since November, Excelsior’s season has been in free-fall and Alfons Groenendijk’s side went into Friday’s tie only six points off bottom spot.
Another defeat seemed likely as NEC, who are still chasing an unlikely 3rd place finish, began the game strongly with Anthony Limbombe going close, while Joey Sleegers was denied by Tom Muyters. However, on 13 minutes, Tom van Weert netted the opener from distance, via a deflection off Wojciech Golla, and Excelsior had the lead.
The home side dominated after the goal, but had to wait until the 81st minute to double their lead with Van Weert firing into an empty net from Adil Auassar’s pass.
The victory moves Excelsior level on points with 16th placed Willem II, while NEC Sit 8th.
