Seven years after leaving Vitesse for Utrecht, Ricky van Wolfswinkel lined up for the Arnhem club again and took only 21 minutes to open the scoring as he lashed the ball past Kostas Lamprou from a difficult angle after a nice combination with Marvelous Nakamba.
Erik Falkenburg was denied an equaliser by Eloy Room, and on 29 minutes Lamprou spilled a tame Valeri Qazaishvili strike into his own net to gift Vitesse a second goal. Three minutes later Nathan made it 3-0 on the rebound after 16-year-old winger Mitchell van Bergen’s strike came back off the post and the on loan Chelsea forward then added a fourth before the break after good work from Kelvin Leerdam.
Willem II pulled one back through Spanish striker Fran Sol in the second half, but the home side never threatened an unlikely comeback and Vitesse could have added another goal through substitute Yuning Zhang, who sent a header straight at Lamprou from close range.
The victory is the perfect start to the season for new Vitesse boss Henk Fraser, while Erwin van de Looi has some thinking to do with his side looking well off the pace.
