VAR played a crucial role as Heerenveen earned a 2-2 draw at Vitesse Arnhem.

After a bright start from the visitors, Heerenveen took the lead in the 14th minute when Michel Vlap raced into the Vitesse half before hammering a strike from 30 yards past Eduardo.

Ten minutes later the home side were level through Mukhtar Ali, who nodded into the net after Oussama Darfalou’s effort had come down off the bar. Darfalou then had the ball in the net but it was disallowed for a foul.

Just before the hour mark, Bryan Linssen fired the hosts in front after a cross landed at the winger’s feet.

Vlap, Ben Rienstra and substitute Dennis Johnsen were all thwarted by Eduardo as Heerenveen looked for an equaliser, while at the other end, Linssen was denied by Warner Hahn.

In the final minute came big drama. Heerenveen were on the attack and two players went down in the box. Play was waved on and from the attack Martin Odegaard netted a third for Vitesse. However, VAR intervened and eventually the goal was chalked off and Heerenveen were awarded a penalty.

Sam Lammers remained calm to score from the spot and earn his side a 2-2 draw.

The point means Vitesse remains fifth, while Heerenveen are 11th.
