Heerenveen midfielder Joey Veerman has released a statement revealing why he is not with the Netherlands U21 squad.

The midfielder’s absence from the squad for the games against Belarus and Portugal raised questions. At the time, Jong Oranje boss Erwin van de Looi stated he had just gone with other options.

Even with Ryan Gravenberch joining the Netherlands squad, and Dani de Wit pulling out, Veerman has not been called. The Heerenveen star has now released a statement saying he is absent at his own request.

He said on the Heerenveen website, “First of all, I would like to say that I think it is an honour to play for the Dutch Junior Team. For private reasons I want to spend my time differently during the international periods for the time being.ย This is the reason I was not called up.

“I will focus on SC Heerenveen in the coming period and hope to be able and allowed to represent my country at a later time.”
