The hosts went into the game as heavy favourites and they took the lead on six minutes when Dries Wuytens shrugged off Michel Breuer to head in the opener.
Sparta were lucky that it was only 1-0 at the break with Vincent Vermeij, Kristoffer Peterson and Joey Pelupessy all passing up good chances to double the hosts lead.
Shortly after the break, Sparta had a rare venture forward and Sheral Floranus crossed for Nick Proschwitz to tap-in the equaliser. The goal lifted the visitors but in the 74th minute, Reuven Niemeijer fired Heracles back in front after being picked out by Brahim Darri.
Sparta fought back again, though, with Proschwitz equalising again from a Loris Brogno cross and it appeared the goal was going to earn the Rotterdammers a point. However, in the 89th minute, Vermeij finished off a counter to give Heracles all three points.
Heracles are ninth after the victory, while Sparta Rotterdam remain on the same points as bottom club Roda JC.
