Liverpool announced the £75 million signing of the Dutch international from Southampton on Monday. Van Dijk is now the most expensive defender in football history.

On his high fee, van Dijk said on the Liverpool website, ”I know that a lot of money has been paid for me but there is nothing than I can do about that.

”I do not decide the price the market does. The only thing that I can do is work really hard and give everyday 100 percent and that is what I am planning to do for this club.

On his reasons for moving to Liverpool, he added, ”This club is so special, The environment, culture, history, players, manager and of course the fans they make this club so special.

”This is the perfect club for me and I believe that I will become a better player here. I can’t wait to make my debut at Anfield.”

Van Dijk will wear number four at his new clubs and he explained his choice, ”I played with number 4 at FC Groningen. It’s my favorite number. Jordy Clasie had it at Southampton and I wanted to take it off him. Sami Hyypia also played with number 4 at Liverpool and he also played for Willem II. The club where I learnt my trade as a footballer and that makes it special for me.”
