Vitesse’s home form has been imperious this season but in the first half it was AZ Alkmaar who took control, with Alireza Jahanbakhsh forcing Eloy Room into a good save while Vincent Janssen also came close. For the home side Valeri Qazaishvili came closest to opening the scoring but after a fine dribble the midfielder shot just wide.
Just before the break AZ were handed the advantage when Marvelous Nakamba was shown a straight red card for a rash challenge on Derrick Luckassen.
The man advantage eventually proved crucial for AZ Alkmaar as Vincent Janssen held off Guram Kashia to fire Markus Henriksen’s past Eloy Room with fifteen minutes left. Two minutes later Henriksen then sealed the win for the away side on the rebound after Room could only parry Janssen’s shot.
The victory lifts AZ up to 10th while Vitesse stay fifth.
