Ricky van Wolfswinkel netted a double as Vitesse saw off NEC Nijmegen in the Gelderse derby.

Both sides went into the game needing a win for different reasons with Vitesse battling for Europe while NEC Nijmegen are looking over their shoulder at a possible relegation battle.

The first half was a cagey affair with neither side creating any clear cut chances. Kevin Diks headed over a corner while Ricky van Wolfwinkel scuffed a shot wide. At the other end, Jay-Roy Grot sent a cross just past the post.

Early in the second half the game exploded into life with Rvan Wolfswinkel heading in Lewis Baker’s free kick. NEC boss Peter Hyballa brought Ferdi Kadioglu off the bench and on 66 minutes the young midfielder tied the game with a lovely curling effort into the top corner.

The hosts went looking for the winner and with five minutes to go they were awarded a penalty for handball in the box. Van Wolfswinkel stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to earn Vitesse the three points.

Vitesse now climb above AZ into fifth while NEC are down in 14th.
