Vitesse Arnhem defeated Utrecht 2-1 on Saturday evening with goalkeeper Maarten Paes playing an unfortunate role.

The home side got off to a good start with Max Clark heading in a corner in the eighth minute to put Vitesse 1-0 up.

Vitesse then lost Oussama Tannane to a serious injury just after the half-hour mark. Moments after the winger left on a stretcher, Utrecht equalised. Adam Maher found the net with a strike from outside the box.

Utrecht were the better side after the break but in the 68th minute, Vitesse regained the lead. Tim Matavz directed Clark’s strike towards goal and it seemed an easy save for Paes. However, the Utrecht goalkeeper let the ball slip through his legs and into the net.

That proved to be the winning goal for Vitesse, who now sit third, while Utrecht are sixth.
