Henk Fraser went into the game looking to experiment with his formation as Luc Castaignos partnered Tim Matavz up front, while there was a European debut for youngster Thomas Oude Kotte in a three-man defence.
Vitesse started the game brightly and Nice goalkeeper Yoan Cardinale had to make a fine save to keep out Guram Kashia’s header. At the other end, Nice were unlucky not to be rewarded a penalty for a push by Julian Lelieveld on Racine Coly.
In the second half, both sides missed decent chances and it appeared the game was heading for a goalless draw until Castaignos fired in the winning goal on 84 minutes.
The victory, which was Vitesse’s first in the Europa League, doesn’t lift the club off bottom spot in the group, but just like Feyenoord on Wednesday it adds some points to the Dutch coefficient which will take a hammering this season.
