A late penalty from Wout Weghorst denied Vitesse a much needed win as Heracles earned a 1-1 draw in Arnhem.

weghorst hee vitVitesse’s home form has imploded recently with no victories in their last three games at the GelreDome, and the club face a fight to reach the end of season play-offs. A victory over visitors Heracles, who are two places above Vitesse in fifth, was seen as crucial by fans who showed their disappointment with coach Rob Maas last week in the 2-2 draw with ADO Den Haag.

The first half was a dull and nervous affair, but it was Heracles who created the only chance of note with Wout Weghorst firing over the bar from close range.

Three minutes into the second half Vitesse opened the scoring as Milot Rashica received the ball in the box and fired past Bram Castro from close range.

Ten minutes before the end Valeri Qazaishvili should have sealed victory for the home side, but the Georgian shot a good chance just wide. Heracles then went down the other end and an unfortunate handball by Sheran Yeini resulted in a Heracles penalty. Weghorst slotted the ball past Eloy Room to earn Heracles a draw.

The point sees Vitesse remain seventh, while Heracles move level on points with Utrecht who sit fourth, but may find themselves in sixth by the end of the weekend if AZ beat PEC Zwolle.
