The hosts went into the game having lost two and drawn one of their last three league games. Coach Leonid Slutsky decided to line-up in a 4-4-2 for the visit of Willem II and within five minutes they were in front.
A great cross from Max Clark was headed into the net by Bryan Linssen. The Vitesse forward then missed three decent chances to extend the hosts lead before the break.
In the 59th minute it was 2-0 when Martin Ødegaard’s shot took a deflection before flying past Timon Wellenreuther.
Vitesse seemed comfortable but in the 61st minute, Alexander Isak pulled one back from close range to bring tension back into the game.
That tension seemed to be gone when Clark fired in Vitesse’s third goal, but Vangelis Pavlidis made it 3-2 with seven minutes left.
The final stages were nervy and in the final seconds Pavlidis got a great chance to equalise but he fired wide.
The win lifts Vitesse back to fifth while Willem II are 11th.
