Vitesse Arnhem were held to a 1-1 draw by Heerenveen on Sunday as they failed to close the gap on leaders Ajax.

The home side dominated the first half with Lois Openda causing Heerenveen’s defence trouble with his pace. It took until the 39th minute for the lead to come, though, with Oussama Darfalou capitalising on some chaos in the Heerenveen box to fire into the net from close range.

Heerenveen came into the game after the break and in the 54th minute, Sherel Floranus equalised after Remko Pasveer had parried the right-back’s initial strike.

Heerenveen then came closest to the winning goal with Pasveer having to make an excellent save to deny Benjamin Nygren. At the other end, Vitesse were denied a penalty after Oussama Tannane went down in the box.

The point means Vitesse are now four points behind Ajax and can lose second spot to PSV Eindhoven. Heerenveen are 7th.
