Feyenoord couldn’t take advantage of AZ’s slip earlier on Sunday as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Vitesse Arnhem.

AZ’s draw at PEC Zwolle meant Feyenoord would move five points clear in third if they could defeat Vitesse. Giovanni van Bronckhorst was without Tonny Vilhena and turned to Orkun Kokcu to fill his place.

The 18-year-old took his chance to impress and opened the scoring just before half-time with a low strike into the bottom corner after being set-up by Robin van Persie. It was a deserved opener for the visitors who had also gone close through Van Persie and Ridgeciano Haps before Kokcu struck.

Just minutes into the second half, Vitesse equalised when Cuco Martina failed to deal with a cross and Mohammed Dauda bundled the ball into the net.

Both sides then had chances to win the game but it was Feyenoord passed up the best opportunity in the final moments. Jan-Arie van der Heijden hit the post with a header and the rebound just missed an awaiting Van Persie.

The point means Feyenoord remains three points in front of AZ while Vitesse are fifth.
