Ron Vlaar has extended his stay at AZ Alkmaar for another year.

The 35-year-old centre-back returned for a second spell with AZ Alkmaar back in 2015, and last season he made 20 appearances for the club.

Vlaar does not yet feel ready to retire and has decided to sign a new one-year deal in Alkmaar.

He told the club’s website, “It is a fact that the end of my career is getting closer. When that is, let me determine how I feel. Especially in 2019 I played a lot of games at a high level, so I am convinced that I can still do it.”

Vlaar’s extension is a relief to Arne Slot, who is losing Stijn Wuytens already this summer leaving AZ looking bare at the back.
