The hosts had the better of a goalless first half, with Sergio Padt saving from Arno Verschueren, while Menno Koch and Thomas Agyepong both sent efforts off target. At the other end, Ajdin Hrustic, Mimoun Mahi and Tom van Weert all passed up decent chances for Groningen.
In the 58th minute the deadlock was broken with Rai Vloet played in on goal before firing an excellent strike past Padt. The former PSV midfielder then doubled NAC’s lead two minutes later with another fine finish after a good run by Agyepong.
With twenty minutes to go, Mahi pulled one back with a lovely finish first-time finish from a long ball over the top. Deep in injury time, the Moroccan thought he had netted the equaliser but his goal was ruled out for offside.
The first three points of the season move NAC to 14th while Groningen are 10th.
