Volendam defeated RKC Waalwijk 2-1 to continue their excellent start to 2023.

Wim Jonk’s side went into the game on the back of their confidence-boosting win over Cambuur last weekend and Volendam came closest to the lead early on with Robert Muhren hitting the post.

Gaetano Oristiano also hit the crossbar for the hosts but they couldn’t manage to find the opening goal before the break.

RKC came out stronger in the second half and eventually they took the lead on the hour mark. Mats Seuntjens got the ball in the penalty area and fired quickly into the net.

The lead only lasted six minutes before Carel Eiting’s free-kick was netted by centre-back Xavier Muyamba, who got his first Eredivisie goal.

Both sides went in search of the winner and it was Volendam that got it as Florent Sanchez da Silva slotted in after being set up by Gaetano Oristanio. Muyamba almost added a third before the end but his effort came back off the crossbar.

Volendam are now 16th in the table while RKC is 11th.
