VVV Venlo came back from a goal down at half time to defeat RKC Waalwijk 3-1.

After more than five years, RKC were once again competing in an Eredivisie tie, while VVV took the field for the first time since Maurice Steijn departed for the Middle-East.

RKC made a dream start with Hannes Delcroix heading a free-kick into the net via the crossbar after only 13 minutes. It could have been even better before the break but Mario Bilate hit the post.

Six minutes into the second half, VVV found the equaliser through new striker Elia Soriano, who found the bottom corner. On the hour mark, the hosts were awarded a penalty for a foul by Etienne Vaessen on Haji Wright and Johnatan Opoku fired the hosts in front.

Peter van Ooijen then sealed the victory with three minutes to go from distance.

A good start to the campaign for VVV Venlo and new boss Robert Maaskant.
