Georgios Giakoumakis scored a hattrick on his debut as VVV-Venlo came away from Emmen with a 5-3 victory.

Emmen relied on their home form last season to keep them away from relegation and they looked on course for another victory at the Oude Meerdijk when Robbert de Vos gave them the lead after only four minutes.

In the 49th minute, Marko Kolar doubled the Emmen lead with a strike from distance. However, a minute later, VVV pulled one back with Georgios Giakoumakis scoring at the far post from Joshua John’s cross.

In the 65th minute, Giakoumakis equalised from the penalty spot after Michael Chacon was penalised for a foul in the box. The Greek striker, who was a summer signing from AEK Athens then put VVV in front with an excellent finish in the 72nd minute.

Nikolai Laursen equalised for Emmen but in the 90th minute, Tobias Pachonik restored VVV’s lead before Jafar Arias settled the victory.
