AZ Alkmaar failed to move level on points with Feyenoord in third after being held to a 0-0 draw by PEC Zwolle.

In midweek, PEC Zwolle boss Jaap Stam was confirmed as the successor to Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Feyenoord. He looked to do his future club a favour by preventing AZ Alkmaar from taking third spot.

PEC Zwolle began the game on top and Marco Bizot was forced into some great saves to deny Mike van Duinen, Younes Namli and Kenneth Paal. At the other end, Thomas Ouwejan hd AZ’s only big chance of the first half but he was denied by Mickey van der Hart.

In the second half, AZ were by far the more dangerous team and they pinned PEC Zwolle into their own half. However, they couldn’t take their chances with van der Hart making an excellent stop to keep out Oussama Idrissi’s curling strike before Calvin Stengs fired straight at the goalkeeper when through on goal.

Adam Maher and Guus Til also failed to take late chances as AZ were forced to settle for a point. They are now two points behind Feyenoord, who face Vitesse later on Sunday. PEC Zwolle are 13th.
