Vitesse went into the game full of confidence after two wins from two, but after only three minutes Wout Weghorst converted a Marko Vejinovic free kick to put AZ ahead.
AZ continued to dominate after the opener and were unlucky not to go into half-time further ahead with Guus Til forcing Remko Pasveer into a good save before Alireza Jahanbakhsh hit the post.
Vitesse survived a series of scares early in the second half and eventually punished AZ for their wastefulness with Tim Matavz heading in a Bryan Linssen cross on 68 minutes. However, with ten minutes to go, Vejinovic once again found Weghorst in the box and the forwards diving header was too strong for Pasveer to keep out.
AZ should have added a third before the end but Levi Garcia failed to finish past Pasveer when through on goal. A first league defeat of the season for Vitesse, but a confidence boost for AZ in the battle for a top four spot.
