The clash in Berlin saw Karim Rekik and Wout Weghorst line up on opposite sides. In the ninth minute, Rekik conceded a penalty which Weghorst scored to give Wolfsburg the lead.
It was the third goal in three games for the striker, who was included in Ronald Koeman’s provisional Netherlands squad last week.
Searching for an equaliser, Hertha Berlin coach Ante Covic turned to 18-year-old Dutchman Daishawn Redan, who joined the club this summer from Chelsea. The striker came on in the 73rd minute to make his Bundesliga debut.
However, Redan couldn’t help his side fight back as Josip Brekalo and Jérôme Roussillon both scored in the last ten minutes to give Wolfsburg a 3-0 victory.
