The Eredivisie season cannot be finished and the club’s will discuss the circumstances with the KNVB on Friday. There appears to be three options being considered by the KNVB.

Current positions are final

Will the KNVB decide that the positions the club’s currently sit in after 25/26 rounds is final?

Ajax are then champions on goal difference, with AZ taking the second Champions League spot. Feyenoord and PSV go into the Europa League with Willem II earning the last spot from the unplayed KNVB Cup final. This would also mean that RKC Waalwijk and ADO Den Haag are relegated with De Graafschap and Cambuur promoted. The promotion/relegation playoff would be scrapped.

This scenario would be challenged by Utrecht, who would feel the fifth Europa League spot could have been theirs, having played a game less than Willem II. They also could have taken a European spot by winning the KNVB Cup final.

It would also be challenged by ADO Den Haag and RKC Waalwijk, who could still have mathematically avoided relegation.

Void the League

The other option is to completely void the season, meaning no Eredivisie champion, relegation or promotion.

That would mean relief for ADO Den Haag and RKC Waalwijk, who would remain in the top flight. However, De Graafschap and Cambuur would miss out on the additional money that promotion would have brought.

Also how would the European places be distributed in this scenario? This season’s positions or last seasons? Last seasons would mean PSV and not AZ take the second Champions League spot. This season’s ending spots would make more sense, but still tricky to distribute the place that would have come from the KNVB Cup final between Feyenoord and Utrecht.

Start next season with 20 teams

Another scenario being considered is to start the Eredivisie next season with twenty teams.

RKC and ADO Den Haag would survive while De Graafschap and Cambuur would be promoted, keeping these clubs happy. However, this would cause a bigger dilemma in terms of the schedule which will already be strained with the later start date and the fact there is a European Championship next summer.

It may mean that the usual winter break would have to either be scrapped or shortened.

Then there is the question on whether the league would stay with twenty sides or would four teams then be relegated at the end?

These scenarios will all likely be discussed on Friday before a final decision is made by the KNVB. Whatever the decision there will definitely be some disappointed clubs.

How would you end the season? Let us know in the comments.
