While Newcastle struggle to ensure safety from relegation, one of their few bright spots this season has been newcomer Gini Wijnaldum. Having captained PSV to the Eredivisie title last season, Wijnaldum was ready for a greater challenge, and he has certainly found one in Newcastle. Despite having talented players like Wijnaldum and Janmaat, they find themselves in the bottom 3 spots week after week.
Fred Rutten, who coached Wijnaldum for one season at PSV sees a brighter future ahead for midfielder. He said, “It does mot surprise me he is doing so well at Newcastle, Gini is a smart football player and a player with tremendous lung capacity, he is exactly the player Newcastle needed.”
Not only does Rutten see elite clubs vying for the central midfielder in seasons to come, but he sees Wijnaldum as the heir to the National team captaincy when Robben retires.
” Gini is definitely a candidate to succeed [Robben] as captain. I see him a big role way down in the Dutch national team.” Adding, “Gini has a good heart, [and] is a true leader.”
Prior to PSV, Wijnaldum was one of the youngest players to play for Feyenoord, and has 24 caps and 4 goals for his country.
