After seeing a shot well blocked in the first half, Wijnaldum netted his first goal in England three minutes into the second half, as he rose to head Gabriel Obertan’s cross past Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg. The goal put Newcastle 2-1 up, but Southampton eventually equalised late on to earn a point.

Wijnaldum’s energetic performance in the midfield earned him the status of man of the match for both the BBC and local Newcastle newspaper The Evening Chronicle, who were both impressed with the 24-year-old.

Newcastle boss Steve McClaren was also delighted with Wijnaldum’s performance and added, “Wijnaldum, what a terrific goal, he’s joined us late and I thought the team overall were very good.”
