Willem II climbed into third with a 2-1 victory over Heerenveen in the Abe Lenstra Stadion.

Heerenveen had not lost at home all season but they were welcoming Willem II, who were fresh from their shock 2-0 victory at Ajax last weekend.

After only nine minutes, Willem II had the lead when Sven Botman made a mistake at the back which allowed Vangelis Pavlidis to slot past Warner Hahn from close range.

In the 22nd minute, Botman made up for his mistake as he headed the ball into the path of Rodney Kongolo, who found the net at the back post to make it 1-1.

Two minutes before the break, Sherel Floranus tried to pass the ball back to his teammate but only found Mike Trésor Ndayishimiye, who went on to find the top corner with an excellent strike to restore Willem II’s lead.

Heerenveen dominated possession in the second half but they failed to create any clear cut chances. At the other end, Pavlidis struck the post as Willem II eventually held on for a 2-1 win.

The victory moves Willem II back into third spot while Heerenveen are 5th.
