Willem II will face Ajax in the KNVB Cup final after beating AZ Alkmaar 2-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Tilburg.

The two sides met in the league at the weekend with Willem II ending AZ’s perfect start to 2019.

AZ seemed to have learned from that loss and they went into the break ahead thanks to a great strike by Calvin Stengs. The winger found some space outside the box and unleashed a strike past Timo Wellenreuther.

Willem II improved in the second half and on the hour mark they leveled the score through Alexander Isak, who slotted the ball past Marco Bizot.

No winner was found before the end meaning extra time. Willem II came closest to a goal in the extra thirty minutes with Kristoffer Kristinsson hitting the post.

In the penalty shootout, Wellenreuther made himself the hero by saving AZ’s first three spot kick’s by Teun Koopmeiners, Guus Til and Ricardo van Rhijn. Willem II scored twice and sealed their place in the final when Bjorn Johnsen struck the post.

Willem II will now face Ajax for the cup on the 5th of May.
