Willem II maintained their push for a top three finish with a 1-0 victory over Heracles Almelo.

The most striking moment of the opening phase involved the referees with Kevin Blom leaving the pitch in the 14th minute after suffering a calf injury. Robin Hensgens took over to make his debut in the Eredivisie.

Willem II were the better side from the start and in the 26th minute they had the lead. Dries Saddiki hit the bar from a free-kick but Sebastian Holmén worked the ball into the net on the rebound.

Mauro Junior almost equalised immediately for the visitors but his strike came back off the crossbar.

After the break, Willem II had plenty of chances to net a second goal but Vangelis Pavlidis, Che Nunnely and Mike Trésor Ndayishimiye all failed to take their chances. At the other end, Cyriel Dessers couldn’t net an equaliser for Heracles.

The win means Willem II remains fourth and level on points with Feyenoord, while Heracles are 10th.
