After their 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Thursday, AZ headed to Tilburg looking to keep up the pace with top two Ajax and PSV.
AZ dominated the early stages with Myron Boadu and Calvin Stengs again catching the eye. In the 22nd minute, Boadu was brought down and Teun Koopmeiners gave AZ the lead from the penalty spot.
However, Willem II equalised ten minutes later when Marios Vrousai set Mats Köhlert in on goal and he made no mistake with his finish past Marco Bizot.
After the equaliser, Willem II dominated and they came close to taking the lead in the second half but the woodwork saved AZ. In the 86th minute, a handball by Owen Wijndal saw Willem II get a penalty. However, Pavlidis skied his spot-kick over the bar.
In injury time, Boadu saw red for his second yellow card but AZ held on for a point. Arnie Slot’s side remain third on goal difference above Vitesse while Willem II are 10th.
Why doesn’t Slot use Ouwejan at all? AZ looked tired in the second half and some rotation could help get the 3 points today. They dominated in the beginning while the players where still fresh, but you could see how tired they were in the second half.
