Wellenreuther played in the youth teams of Schalke 04 and Karlsruher SC and also played for the former’s first team against Real Madrid in the Champions League. He also had a period on loan at Spanish side Real Mallorca in 2015 where he made 33 appearances. The 21-year-old returned to Schalke 04 last season but he did not manage to make the first team.

On signing for Willem II Wellenreuther said ”Because I need to play games I have decided to spread my wings. My time abroad at Real Mallorca was fantastic so I am very happy to be going to the Netherlands to play for Willem II. A new environment and culture will do me good.”
