Willem II have piled the misery on fellow strugglers Roda JC after running out 3-1 winners in Kerkrade.

Both sides went into the game without a point from their opening four matches, but it was visitors Willem II who got off to the better start with Etien Velikonja hammering a shot into the top corner after the ball fell at his feet in the box.

On 23 minutes, a slip in the Roda JC defence presented Fran Sol with the ball outside the area and the Spanish striker burst into the box before finding the bottom corner. Velikonja then sealed a miserable half hour for the hosts by sliding in Thom Haye’s cross to make it 3-0.

Mikhail Rosheuvel made it 3-1 in first-half injury time and Roda JC thought they had got themselves right back into the game minutes into the second period when  Tsiy William Ndenge’s cross was turned into his own net by Jordan Peters. However, the referee ruled that the ball was out of play before the cross came in. Replays showed the decision may have been wrong.

After the disallowed goal Roda JC continued to look for a way back but Willem II held on for their first victory of the season. Roda JC now drop to the bottom of the table.
