The left-back has been performing well for Newcastle in the Premier League since joining on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt, and spoke last week of his hope that the move would be made permanent.
However, on Saturday evening, Willems was forced off in the first half of Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Chelsea. The Dutch international was carried off on a stretcher and the initial diagnosis after full time was not good.
Newcastle boss Steve Bruce told the club’s website, “It looks a horrendous injury for Jetro which is a big blow for us. We fear it’s a Cruciate.”
The injury could be season ending for the defender, who will have been hoping to get an Oranje recall.
