PSV Eindhoven closed the gap on Ajax back to six points with a 3-1 victory over Fortuna Sittard.

With Ajax winning against Groningen, the pressure was on PSV to see off Fortuna to keep themselves in the title race. Roger Schmidt restored Mohamed Ihattaren to the squad but he was on the bench. Yorbe Vertessen came into the line-up with Pablo Rosario out.

After 10 minutes, PSV had the lead with Denzel Dumfries getting in behind before crossing for Eran Zahavi to tap-in. The goal was the 60,000th in the history of the Eredivisie.

In the 27th minute, Zahavi got another goal, this time with a close-range finish from a Phillip Max cross.

It could have been 3-0 before the break but Donyell Malen was denied by Yanick van Osch when in on goal.

Fortuna should have pulled one back ten minutes into the second half, but substitute Emil Hansson pulled his shot wide.

In the 65th minute, PSV thought they had been awarded a penalty when Malen went down. However, VAR noticed the foul took place on the edge of the box. Zahavi took the free-kick but hit the outside of the post.

Just after that miss, PSV made a double change with Ihattaren, Madueke and Erick Gutierrez all coming on. Two minutes later, though, Fortuna pulled a goal back with George Cox finding the top corner from a tight angle.

Fortuna then had two big chances to equalise with Hansson firing straight at Mvogo before Olivier Boscagli had to clear a header off the line.

With four minutes to go, PSV sealed their victory with Madueke marking his return from injury with a stunning strike from outside the box.

The victory keeps PSV six points behind Ajax while Fortuna Sittard are 10th.
