After several uncomfortable performances by FC Twente in their 5-4-1 formation, the Enschede side switched to a 4-3-3 for the match against AZ, and it paid off from the start.
The home side controlled the game from the beginning and on fifteen minutes Youness Mokhtar was prevented from opening the scoring by a great block by Matthias Johansson. Twente opened the scoring ten minutes later with Hakim Ziyech chipping a ball to the back post for Luc Castaignos to score from a tight angle.
AZ couldn’t mount a comeback as Twente continued to create chances, and after Andreas Bjelland came close, Ziyech made it 2-0 just before the break with a curling right foot shot from outside the box.
John van den Brom threw on Aron Johannsson at half time in an effort to change his sides fortunes, but they fell further behind just after the hour mark and it was Ziyech again who placed a shot brilliantly in the top corner to earn a serenade from the Grolsche Veste.
Twente join PEC Zwolle in the semi finals and have a great chance of lifting the trophy they last won in 2011.
