Ziyech was called into the Netherlands national team squad back in May for the ties with the USA and Latvia, but he suffered an injury which stopped him from making his debut.
However Ziyech has now received an invitation to play for Morocco in their two friendly matches next month and the midfielder confirmed his intention to say yes and switch his allegiances from Netherlands. Despite the games being friendlies, should Ziyech put on the Moroccan shirt he would no longer be able to play for the Dutch.
Ziyech told Fox Sports, “As it looks now, I go to Morocco. I just want to play.”
The 22-year-old who has scored 14 goals in 37 Eredivisie appearances for Twente, has represented Netherlands at u21 level and has been tipped as a possible long term replacement for Wesley Sneijder in the number ten position.
Rumours in Morocco also suggest Heracles winger Oussama Tannane and Ajax winger Anwar El Ghazi may also turn away from Netherlands to represent the African nation.
I would personally love to see Ziyech, Tannane and El Ghazi playing for Morocco. They got ripped of the chance to play in the last African Cup of Nations, so a huge infuse of young talent would do miracles for the team’s confidence. Who knows, perhaps we would even see Morocco in a World Cup for the first time since 1998!
